Binghamton 20-something builds web site to get play.
Binghamton does not have a lame party scene. It’s just that it’s way way waaaaaaaaaay friggin way underground.

At least that’s the theory behind the new 607Magazine.com.
Which, BTW, isn’t a magazine at all. It’s just a very sleek, very cool web site designed by the boys at 607 Media. It’s just called a “magazine” to give you that glossy, colorful, expensive “we’ve got so much extra cash we can afford to give away cologne samples on the inside cover” vibe.

By day, the folks at 607 Media are hip, information-age web gurus with a Broome-based biz. And by night, they are cataloguers of all things Bing & booze.
The heart of the site is its consummate nightlife events listing—but it’s also got original articles about area bars and lifestyle tips.

I Facebook poked 607 founder Scott Fineout and asked for a quick interview with the man—to find out if this whole magazine deal was really just a plot to get with area girls. I’m onto him.
So you’ve got this lifestyle/nightlife mag for twenty-somethings in the Southern Tier. IS there nightlife for 20-somethings in the Southern Tier? If so, where?
"What is there to do?" It might seem like a normal question to most, but for those who grew up in this area I’d have to say it ranks as the most frequently asked question of all time. I can remember sitting around with my friends, tossing a few beverages back and asking that question all the time. I think younger adults around this area need more of an outlet then just drinking or smoking to be quite honest. An answer to your question is yes there is stuff to do. I don’t think that has ever been the real problem. The real problem to me is that all the options have been played out for some time now and people are growing tired of the same old options. We have stuff to do every night in our calendar, and even have bar specials. I think it should help people save some scratch and realize there is a lot more to do in this area then once thought. I think blogs and alternative media is something this area has needed for a long time.
What’s the quirkiest/most exciting thing you’ve found in the area while doing research for the site?
Hmm, most exciting? I’d have to say the possibilities. I know you are probably looking for a particular place my two feet have taken me but that’s really not the answer, it’s the possibilities. There are big acts traveling all around this area going to Scranton, Buffalo, Rochester, etc. but they always seem to miss Binghamton. As far as entertainment goes I’d say Binghamton is the black sheep of the New York family. I’m not sure if the Arena doesn’t have the economics, or willingness, or whatever it might be. We need more major label concerts in this area because they are always traveling through and around here but not stopping.
So are you just a big community do-gooder, or is this whole thing a big-money business venture?
I love this community. I’d love to see it thrive like it had well before I was a gleam in the parent’s eye if you catch my drift. I think this is an exciting community because of the college and the possibilities it opens up. I’ve seen other website forums like BCVoice be full of people who just complain and bag about the community. I started to realize that this was one of the only connections to Binghamton online and thought we needed something more positive, and younger. I’m not really doing this to make millions. I own 607 Media which is a web design business in Binghamton. That pays my bills. My own well being isn’t really my purpose with the magazine. When it’s all said and done I’d like this website to be a place younger people such as myself can come to see what is going on, or just waste a few minutes of boredom. With the money I do make from the magazine I hope to put into the entertainment community in town and hopefully bring more shows. That is a little further down the road. I still need to learn more in order to jump into that business. My heart is definetly there though.
What kind of stories will we find in the mag? What kind will you absolutely avoid?
Our main focus is local music right now. We also have a section called the Daily Dirt which just lets people know some music news for the day. Obviously as the name suggests, it will be updated everyday for the site very soon. We’d like to feature more local things to do in this area. Not just bars but really off the wall things as well. Everyday life of someone my age who is looking to find more localized content online. We’re not looking to cover local news in a newspaper type way. A lot of people ask me if we’re going to cover a fire, or if we’re ever going to go to print. We’re not looking to compete with the Press and Sun, we’re just looking to give 20-something’s more stuff to look at. As far as print, I’m still not sure on that either. There are still much more possibilities for us online at this moment.
If somebody wants to write for 607, what qualities do they need? Are you looking for help?
Craigslist is filled with those "work for free and we’ll give you 5% of the company" deals. We’re not going to cheapen ourselves or anyone else like that. I mean we’re always looking for people who just want to write or take photographs. We’ll definetly let people in this area have a place to show what they can do. As far as full time employment, I’m not sure we’re there yet to be honest. Yet. You can email me at

Come on, be honest: is this whole magazine just a clever scheme to get girls? You can tell me.
It is. I mean the whole "give a girl a line at a bar" tactic is so played out, and so is anything else that you try to do for attention. I decided I’d start a company and a magazine to get the ladies. Got to get your upgrade on.

That is a very sleek website. Between that and BingPop, I’m getting hope for our age demographic.
